A pearl is a miracle of nature, a living gem.

    • Natural pearl beds were depleted about a century ago;
      hence there are virtually no natural seawater pearls in today’s
      retail market. Natural pearls are, by definition, all types of pearl formed by an accident, without human intervention.
    • Their successor, the cultured seawater pearl, is equally desirable and available in larger quantities, sizes and colours. They are formed when humans intentionally introduce an irritant into the oyster. There are currently three main groups of cultured pearl available – Akoya, South Sea (white and black) and freshwater.
    • Freshwater cultured pearls are cultivated in several species of freshwater pearl mussel found throughout the world but mainly found in freshwater rivers, lakes, ponds and in China, farmers’ irrigation ditches. They come in a wide array of colours, shapes and sizes.
    • Imitation and simulated pearls are completely man made from a variety of materials.
